This covering is changed every year during the Hajj season, on the 9th day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah, the day pilgrims ascend to Arafat. The replacement ceremony is carried out with great care and awe. The new, elaborately embroidered cover is laid on the Kaaba with the help of cranes, while the old cover is torn to pieces as a sacred souvenir and given to statesmen or museums.
