What's Inside the Black Stone?
Hajar al-Aswad (Black Stone) is a sacred stone located in a silver frame approximately 1.5 meters above the ground at the southeast corner of the Kaaba.
What’s Inside:
- Physically: No scientific analysis has been conducted on what is inside the stone. What is visible from the outside is that the stone has cracked and broken over time, and these pieces have been placed inside a silver frame (ring) for protection. This frame holds the stone together and creates a smooth surface for Muslims to kiss or touch.
- Spiritually: According to Islamic belief, this stone has a special spiritual significance. Traditions state that it descended from heaven and was originally pure white, but darkened due to the sins of people.
Important Note: Touching or kissing the Black Stone is considered by Muslims to be fulfilling a sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and an act of spiritual purification. The stone’s spiritual value stems not from its physical substance, but from its historical and religious significance.
What is the scent of the Black Stone?
The Black Stone itself has no known scent. However, not the stone itself, but the area surrounding the Kaaba where it is located and its environment have become associated with a strong and distinctive scent.
The reason for this is as follows:
- Incense Burning at the Kaaba: The Kaaba itself, both inside and out, is regularly incensed with the world’s purest and most valuable incense, pure Musk, Amber, and especially high-quality Ud-u Hindi (Indian Agarwood).
- Tradition of Spiritual Purification: These incenses are part of a centuries-old tradition of respect and spiritual purification.
- Pilgrim Theme: Millions of visitors who touch or kiss the Black Stone carry this scent, which permeates the Kaaba’s covering and environment, onto the stone’s surface.
Ultimately, the unique and intense scent people experience when approaching the Black Stone is not the stone’s own scent, but the scent of the Kaaba’s sacred incense, a blend of oud and musk. This scent becomes one of the most cherished spiritual memories for visitors.

Calligraphy and Diamonds: Luxury Meets Eastern Elegance
KISWAH designs are characterized by vibrant color depth, achieved using the traditional enamel art technique.
KISWAH combines Calligraphy, the most elegant art form of the East, with modern diamond luxury.
Inspired by the tradition of the Kiswah embroidered on the Kaaba, we use Islamic calligraphy motifs in our jewelry that carry the Kalima-e-Tawhid, Blessing or special meanings. These motifs are framed by flawlessly cut diamonds and high-quality gold (usually 18K). This union creates luxury pieces that are not only eye-catching but also possess a deep cultural and symbolic meaning, unmatched anywhere in the world.
Who first built the Kaaba?
According to Islamic belief, the construction of the Kaaba is divided into two main periods:
The First Foundations (Prophet Adam): Historical sources and narrations indicate that the first foundations and structure of the Kaaba were built by Prophet Adam as the first house of worship established on earth.
Rebuilding and Elevation (Prophet Abraham and Prophet Ishmael): Over time, the Kaaba was destroyed or its foundations were lost due to floods and natural events. As stated in the Holy Quran, it was Abraham and his son Ishmael who rebuilt and elevated the Kaaba on its existing foundations.
Therefore, the construction process of the Kaaba, whose architectural existence has been preserved to this day, is identified with Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail.
Why is the Kaaba Covered? (The Meaning of the Kiswah Tradition)
The fundamental reason for covering the Kaaba with a sacred cloth called the Kiswah is not simply decoration, but rather an expression of respect, reverence, and sanctity based on centuries of Islamic tradition.
Here are the main reasons for the Kiswah tradition:
1. Respect and Reverence (Exaltation)
- The Kaaba is considered the holiest place on earth (Baytullah – House of Allah) for Muslims. Covering it with a beautiful, expensive, and clean cloth is a material manifestation of the highest level of respect for this sanctity.
- This cloth emphasizes the splendor and spiritual value of the Kaaba, reinforcing the feelings of awe and respect in the hearts of visitors.
2. Sunnah and an Ancient Tradition
- The tradition of covering the Kaaba dates back to pre-Islamic times (to Tuba Abu Karib Asad).
- During the time of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), this tradition continued, and covering the Kaaba was accepted as a sunnah.
3. Symbol of Change and Renewal
- The regular renewal of the covering each year (usually on the Day of Arafat) symbolizes the beginning of the year and spiritual purification.
- The new covering represents renewal in faith, demonstrating the importance given to the cleanliness and sanctity of the Kaaba.
What is the Source and Mystery of the Kaaba Cover's Fragrance?
The Kaaba covering, known as the Kiswah, has been known for centuries for its spiritual scent, and this scent is an integral part of the Kaaba experience for visitors. The source of this scent is as follows:
- Natural Raw Materials: The Kiswah is made from pure silk fabric. Silk has the property of retaining scent for a long time.
- High-Quality Incense: From the manufacturing process onwards and after being hung on the Kaaba, the cover is regularly perfumed with the world’s purest and most expensive scents, especially Ud-u Hindi (Indian Agarwood), Amber, and pure Musk-based incense.
- Volume and Temperature Effect: The Kaaba’s enclosed and warm interior, combined with the volume of the cover, traps the scent of these incenses, transforming it into a unique, intense “Kaaba Scent.”
Important Note: The scents on the Kaaba cover are not determined by any laboratory formula. They consist of the most precious natural incenses and essences used in the Ottoman and Saudi traditions for centuries. The KISWA brand aims to evoke this spiritual scent with its products.
Is there a piece of the Kaaba Cover?
Yes, some of Kiswah Jewellery’s special collections feature original pieces of the Kaaba cover certified by the Mecca Museum, or details inspired by the patterns of this cover. The authenticity of these products is certified.
Do products containing pieces of the Kaaba cover change color?
Careful maintenance is important to preserve the spiritual value and original beauty of your jewelry containing pieces of the Kaaba cover. Keep in mind that due to the natural silk structure of the Kaaba cover, it may show slight color changes over time; this is completely normal and does not affect the authenticity or value of the product.
However, to prevent damage to these delicate pieces and precious metals, you must keep them away from chemicals such as perfume, lotion, hair spray, chlorinated water (pool), sea water, and harsh cleaning products. Additionally, you should protect your jewelry from drops and impacts, and only use a soft, dry cloth when cleaning it. You can find our detailed usage and care instructions on our [Usage and Care Instructions Page].
Will I receive a Kaaba Cover certificate with every purchase?
Yes, you will receive a certificate with every purchase of jewelry containing the Kaaba Cover (Kiswah) from KISWA.
This certification process is our most important guarantee to ensure the authenticity of your product:
- Certificate of Authenticity: Each Kaaba Cover collection item comes with a specially sealed certificate card confirming the fabric’s source and authenticity.
- Serial Number: This certificate usually includes a unique serial number specific to the product. This number proves that the piece in your jewelry matches our authenticity records.
- Value and Trust: Considering the rarity and spiritual value of the Kaaba cover, the certificate shows that your jewelry is not just an accessory, but also a certified heritage item that must be preserved.
This document is tangible proof of KISWA’s commitment to luxury and cultural heritage.
Is there gold on the Kaaba cover (Kiswah)?
Yes, gold is used in the Kaaba cover.
The Kiswah, the outer covering of the Kaaba, is woven from pure black silk. The Quranic verses, names of Allah, and calligraphic motifs of prayers embroidered on the cover are crafted using pure gold and silver threads. These embroideries add immense splendor and sacred richness to the cover.
The authenticity of the Kaaba cover pieces used in your brand’s jewelry reflects this valuable craftsmanship.
What is written on the Kaaba cover (Kiswah)?
The main texts on the Kiswah, the covering of the Kaaba, are embroidered with pure gold and silver threads and written in eye-catching calligraphy.
The texts embroidered on the cover are usually as follows:
- The Kalima-e-Tawhid: “La ilaha illallah Muhammadun Rasulullah” (There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is His messenger).
- Verses from the Holy Quran: Especially verses related to Hajj, Tawhid, and the greatness of Allah.
- Asma-ul Husna: Some of Allah’s beautiful names.
- Prayers and Remembrances: Prayers and remembrances such as “Ya Hannan, Ya Mennan.”
These verses and expressions are skillfully embroidered on the borders around the Kaaba and on the curtain (Burka) above its door, giving the Kiswah a unique artistic and spiritual depth.
Who has the key to the Kaaba right now?
According to an ancient tradition dating back approximately 16 centuries, the key to the door of the Kaaba and the authority to open it are held by the Kaaba Servants of Mecca (Beni Shayba) family.
The reasons why this family holds the key are as follows:
- The Prophet’s Command: The authority to safeguard the key to the Kaaba was given by our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to Osman bin Talha (from the Beni Shayba tribe) after the conquest of Mecca. Our Prophet decreed that this key would remain in their lineage until the Day of Judgment.
- Spiritual Trust: For Muslims around the world, this key represents a great spiritual trust and honor.
Current Status: The key is currently kept by Sâdin, the oldest member of the Beni Shayba family (Keeper of the Key). The Kaaba is opened by members of this family on the orders of the Saudi Royal Family for cleaning or special visits.
What is inside the Kaaba?
Contrary to what is seen from the outside, the interior of the Kaaba is not empty, but rather quite simple and is not used for worship. It contains the following elements:
- Three Wooden Pillars: There are three ornate wooden pillars that support the ceiling and have stood for centuries.
- Wall Inscriptions: The interior walls feature plaques and inscriptions bearing the names of the caliphs and rulers who commissioned the maintenance and restoration of the Kaaba.
- Gift Chest: There is a special chest where copies of the Quran and valuable items gifted to the Kaaba are placed.
- Door of Repentance: There is a small door (staircase) inlaid with mother-of-pearl and gold that provides access to the roof of the Kaaba.
The floor and lower parts of the walls are generally covered with marble. There is no mihrab or minbar for worship inside, meaning it is not arranged like a mosque. It can only be entered for cleaning and special visits.
When is the covering of the Kaaba (Kiswah) replaced?
The covering of the Kaaba (Kiswah) is traditionally changed once a year.
Time of Replacement:
- The covering was usually replaced at the beginning of the Hijri year, that is, on the first day of the month of Muharram.
- However, in recent years, Saudi Arabia has changed this tradition to coincide with the ninth day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah, i.e., the Day of Arafat.
Importance of this Change: Changing the covering on Arafat Day ensures that all pilgrims and the Islamic world have the opportunity to see the Kaaba with its new and clean covering the next day (the first day of Eid al-Adha). This event is a spiritual tradition followed live by millions of Muslims every year.
